The Taiwanese artist Kairyu has been collecting and exploring antiques for many years, creating works based on the themes of spirituality and the soul that resides in objects. Since 2019, Kairyu has been producing lighting sculptures. In recent years, using materials such as metal, wood, and handmade paper, as well as techniques involving layered mineral pigments, they have been creating a wide range of works, including lighting, tea utensils, incense burners, and objets d'art. Kairyu's unique world is built upon the reinterpretation of old items passed down through the ages. Please take this opportunity to view Kairyu’s work. The artist will be present on the first day, the 16th.
From October 19th (Sat) to November 18th (Mon), an exhibition titled "A Place That is Vanishing While Being Born" will be held in the Kikukawa area of Kanazawa, using five vacant houses as venues. The vacant houses are likened to plants in a stage of decay or dormancy, where artists and performers will showcase their works, attempting to breathe new life into these spaces through art. In response to the exhibition’s theme, hitonoto will present the exhibition "Light Sculpture| New Moon" as part of this event.
Profile
Whirlflow(洄流 | Kairyu)
Born in 1988 in Taiwan. The name “Kairyu” is derived from the artist's subconscious state. It is like a spiral flow from the outside to the inside. It is wind, a whirlpool, stardust, and an imagination of time flowing in space.

Light Sculpture|Statement
“Lunar Phase” refers to the form of the moon as seen from Earth. The moon itself does not emit light, and the moonlight we see is sunlight reflected on the moon. The rotation and revolution of the moon and the earth allow us to witness the phases of the lunar cycle as it waxes and wanes. The suspended light sculptures are like the moon in the night sky, emitting a dreamy, silent light. Like the names of lunar phases such as new moon, full moon, and crescent moon, the shapes and textures of the light reveal their “phases” as they are illuminated by the light, creating a different atmosphere.
Kairyu's lighting works, “Ancient Kilnware” share a common spiritual meaning. The organic circular forms and the circles emitted by the work's light are like imperfect “circular phases” with breath and rhythm, encompassing truth and enlightenment, emptiness and the universe. His work explores the spiritual power that the shapes, qualities, and colors of objects have on people. Like moonlight, a faint light in the darkness provides a sense of security, and in such an environment people can feel their own inner world. These experiences have inspired me to explore the flow between light and shadow. In its essence, the “Lighting” works pursue the beauty of “shades and shadows”.
