Dutch artist Birgitta de Vos will visit washi paper artisans in and around Kanazawa. She will work in situ at hitonoto gallery the first week of September. Her way of working with washi will make the space speak beyond words. The installation ‘Light Letters’ will be on show from the 15th of September and her items and books will be sold at the gallery and through our online store.

Washi paper is said to have been brought to Japan in 610 A.D. by a Korean monk. The history of washi is not only more than 1000 years old, but has evolved over time to meet the needs of each era.

Traditionally, washi paper was used for copying sutras to promote Buddhism when it was introduced to Japan. During the Edo period washi paper was used for ukiyoe and nishiki-e art. Nowadays, handmade washi paper is becoming increasingly rare, but a few craftsmen are still capable of creating wonderful papers through ancient methods. It is said these papers can last 1000 years.

Birgitta’s fourth book, "ALL IN NOTHING | NOTHING IN ALL" is the inspiration for the creation of the ‘Light Letters’ installation.

Artist profile

Birgitta de Vos, a dutch artist, spends her time, when not traveling, between her studio in the Dutch countryside and Axel Vervoordt’s Canard site in Antwerp. She conveys her message through various mediums: books, photography, poetry, and art.

Artist statement

'From nowhere to now… here…

The most important journey in life is the inward journey. It is free and available for all.

In situ is the place to be, as an artist in residence, within the parameters of place, product and people. Within these parameters I can create and give form and reform things. Transform, recycle, reuse, review and reincarnate the ‘what was’, into ‘what is’ and ‘what can be’.

The earth is not something we own, but something we are.

The birthplace of creation is our unlimited field of imagination. Our true gift is not out there, but within ourselves.

It is not yesterday or tomorrow, but right here and now.

It is the only place to be.

Now, here, is all that matters…'
