Simple forms reveal the powerful expressions of coarse, unrefined clay. We are pleased to present an exhibition by ceramic artist Atsushi Ogata.
When Ogata first began working with ceramics in Seto, Aichi, he also explored highly decorative approaches, incorporating incised lines and patterns into his work. Over time, however, he became increasingly drawn to expressions that emerge from the clay and firing process itself, rather than those created through deliberate decoration. Fascinated by the transformations brought about by material and flame, he moved his studio to its present location in Nara around twenty years ago in pursuit of wood-firing.
Kohiki is one of the techniques Ogata has continued to explore since the beginning of his career. Layers of slip and glaze are applied to the clay. From the interplay of different clays and the ever-changing nature of the flame, each piece emerges with an expression entirely its own.
This will be Ogata’s first solo exhibition in the Hokuriku region. The artist will be present on the opening day.
